A Greek ministerial decision in November 2006 designated the Cyclades interconnection project—covering the interconnection of Syros, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos with the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System and reinforcement of the Andros–Tinos link—as a project of major importance for the country’s economy. This designation applied to Phase A works, including the 150 kV radial Syros–Mykonos submarine cable, and recognised the strategic role of the scheme in securing reliable power supply and reducing oil‑based generation costs on the islands.
