fault finding on a subsea export cable for Burbo Bank OWF, locating the fault 20–25 metres outside the onshore substation
In April 2019, Correll Services was mobilised at short notice by Briggs Marine to fault find on the subsea export cable for the Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm. Working from each end of the export circuit with a team of four high-voltage and fibre-optic testing technicians, Correll located a fault approximately 20–25 metres outside the onshore substation. The fault-finding campaign used specialist diagnostic equipment including a bridge tester (HVB10), surge tester (thumper) and optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) to precisely identify the failure location and support subsequent repair of the export cable.
