Burbo Bank – Wallasey 33 kV HVAC export system for the original 90 MW Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm, comprising three parallel export cables over a 10 km route (approximately 6.5 km subsea and 3.5 km onshore) between the wind farm and the onshore substation in the Wallasey/Birkenhead area.
ABB Group supplied the power cables for the original 90 MW Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm, including the 33 kV export cable system linking the turbines to the onshore substation near Wallasey and associated onshore sections. During the construction phase in 2006–2007, ABB manufactured and delivered three parallel 33 kV HVAC export cables running from the wind farm to shore, as well as the underground land cables connecting to the grid connection substation where the voltage is stepped up to 132 kV. Cable installation offshore was undertaken by a separate marine contractor, while ABB’s scope focused on design and manufacture of the submarine and onshore power cables that form the export connection for the original Burbo Bank project.
