On 28 July 2023, IPTO energised and launched the upgraded 150 kV submarine high‑voltage interconnection between Kyllini on the Greek mainland and the island of Zakynthos, marking first power flow on the new Zakynthos–Kyllini replacement cable. The approximately 23 km, three‑core XLPE cable with optical fibre and 200 MVA capacity, supplied and installed on a turnkey basis by Hellenic Cables/Fulgor, replaced the ageing early‑1980s link and immediately began covering the island’s increased loads at the height of the tourist season.
Following successful energisation on 28 July 2023, IPTO placed the upgraded Zakynthos–Kyllini 150 kV submarine interconnection into operational service, with media and industry reports in early August confirming the interconnector had begun operation. The new cable system, delivered in under a year by Hellenic Cables as main EPCI contractor, fully replaced the obsolete 1980s link and now provides secure, reliable transmission capacity for Zakynthos and the wider Ionian Islands.
On 15 December 2022, IPTO commissioned Hellenic Cables, the cables segment of Cenergy Holdings, as the main turnkey contractor and cable supplier for the 150 kV electrical interconnection between Zakynthos and Kyllini, with a total length of about 23 km. The contract covers design, manufacturing and supply of land and submarine high-voltage cables and accessories, civil works for land cable installation, laying and protection of the submarine cables, land–sea transitions, jointing and terminations at IPTO-built substations, as well as testing and commissioning.
On 7 July 2022, IPTO advanced procurement for the upgrade of the Kyllini–Zakynthos electrical interconnection by unsealing the tender envelope and naming Fulgor S.A., a member of the Hellenic Cables Group, as the candidate contractor. This step marked the start of bid review for the turnkey project to replace the ageing 150 kV subsea cable, after which construction of the new interconnection could commence.
Prior to the 2023 energisation of the upgraded Kyllini–Zakynthos interconnection, the new 150 kV high-voltage submarine cable system for the link was manufactured at Hellenic Cables’ state-of-the-art submarine cable facility in Corinth, Greece. The system was designed by Hellenic Cables’ in-house engineering team and then installed offshore by the company’s own teams together with an installation subcontractor.
Hellenic Cables, acting as main EPCI contractor for IPTO, completed the installation of the new 150 kV high‑voltage submarine cable system between Kyllini and Zakynthos, delivering a turnkey replacement for the ageing 1980s interconnection. The in‑house engineered XLPE three‑core cable, manufactured at Hellenic Cables’ Corinth plant and integrated with optical fibre over a route of about 23 km, was fully installed by the company’s own teams and an installation subcontractor as part of a wider project to upgrade the Ionian Islands’ transmission system.
