Siemens was contracted in consortium with Prysmian by NGET/SPT Upgrades Ltd to deliver the high‑voltage direct current converter stations for the Western HVDC Link between Hunterston in Scotland and Flintshire Bridge in Wales. Under the approximately €1.1 billion turnkey interconnector contract, Prysmian supplies and installs the long‑distance HVDC cable system, while Siemens is responsible for the design, engineering, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the onshore HVDC converter stations at each end of the 600 kV, ~2.2 GW link. The scheme increases power transfer capability between the Scottish and English transmission grids, enabling large volumes of renewable generation from Scotland to be exported to demand centres in England and allowing bi‑directional power flows.
