Western HVDC Link 600 kV bipole HVDC cable system, including a >400 km route with a major submarine section in the Irish Sea and shorter land sections in Scotland and England-Wales.
Prysmian Group was awarded a record contract worth approximately €800 million by NGET/SPT Upgrades Ltd, a joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and Scottish Power Transmission, to deliver the Western HVDC Link between Scotland and England/Wales. The turnkey scope covered design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning of a 600 kV bipole HVDC cable system using mass-impregnated PPL insulation. Prysmian supplied and installed both the long submarine section in the Irish Sea and the onshore cable sections in Scotland and England/Wales, using its cable-laying vessel Giulio Verne for offshore installation. The link, with a 422 km route length (including 385 km subsea and 37 km onshore), reinforces the GB transmission system by enabling large-scale transfer of renewable power from Scotland to demand centres further south.
