SP Energy Networks announced the commencement of on-site construction works for the Western Link and confirmed that the main contract to build the link had been awarded to a consortium of Siemens and Prysmian. The developer marked the start of construction at the Hunterston converter-station site, reported ~450 jobs supported during construction, and described the project as a £1.3 billion cross-border subsea electricity link scheduled for commissioning in 2016. The announcement linked the contract award to mobilisation and the start of onshore works at the northern converter station.
