Two 220 kV HVAC export circuits from the Walney Extension offshore substations to landfall near Heysham, plus associated 220 kV subsea interlink between the platforms, forming the Walney Extension OFTO export cable system.
NKT delivered the high‑voltage cable system that forms the Walney Extension transmission assets, later transferred to the Walney Extension OFTO. Under a contract originally awarded by DONG Energy, NKT designed, manufactured, supplied and commissioned two 220 kV AC extruded submarine export cable systems linking the two offshore substations to shore, as well as the associated underground onshore cable system connecting at Middleton (Heysham). The scope included engineering and production of more than 157 km of 220 kV submarine cable and about 24 km of underground cable, together with the supply and installation of all 220 kV joints and terminations. NKT’s work covered both offshore and onshore sections and provided the complete HVAC export link from the 659 MW Walney Extension wind farm into the onshore transmission grid, which now constitutes the Walney Extension OFTO cable assets.
