HVDC Light power-from-shore link from the Kollsnes onshore station to the Troll A gas platform, about 70 km offshore, implemented as four parallel subsea HVDC cables (Troll A 1&2).
ABB was awarded the Troll A Precompression Electrical Drive System (EDS) contract by Statoil in 2002 to provide the Troll A 1&2 power‑from‑shore HVDC Light link. The scope covered system engineering and design, manufacture and installation of the complete HVDC Light transmission system, including the onshore rectifier station at Kollsnes, the offshore inverter equipment on the Troll A platform, and the associated subsea cable system. A key element was ABB’s extruded‑insulation HVDC Light subsea cables, manufactured at its Karlskrona plant and installed as four parallel 70 km links between shore and platform, providing about 88 MW of power for new gas compressor drives. By replacing platform gas‑turbine generation with electricity from the Norwegian grid, the project reduced emissions and operating costs while ensuring a reliable power supply for long‑term gas production from Troll A.
