In 1974 the Wadkabel connection to the provincial electricity grid was completed, enabling Terschelling (along with Ameland and Schiermonnikoog) to be supplied via the new submarine cable link instead of local power stations. Following this grid connection, the local generating plants on these islands were shut down, marking completion and operational readiness of the Terschelling submarine cable connection.
