In July 2025 Red Eléctrica completed the new 66 kV El Palmar substation in San Sebastián de La Gomera, its first transmission grid facility on the island and the La Gomera terminus of the Tenerife–La Gomera submarine interconnection. The underground GIS substation, integrated architecturally into the local landscape, provides the interface between the island’s distribution network and the new 66 kV double‑circuit link, allowing La Gomera to export surplus renewable generation and reduce dependence on the existing thermal plant.
