Red Eléctrica completed the Tenerife–La Gomera 66 kV double‑circuit underground‑submarine interconnection, including the 36 km subsea cable and the new El Palmar (La Gomera) and Chío (Tenerife) substations, creating a unified electricity subsystem for both islands and reinforcing security of supply, renewable integration and lower generation costs in the Canary Islands.
Following completion of submarine cable laying between Tenerife and La Gomera in September 2025, Prysmian and Red Eléctrica scheduled final system testing for November 2025. After two additional cable protection campaigns and jointing in the onshore transition chambers, electrical tests were to be carried out to verify performance of the 66 kV double‑circuit interconnection before it entered service.
By 18 September 2025, Prysmian had finished laying both circuits of the 66 kV, 36 km submarine cable interconnection between Tenerife and La Gomera, completing the subsea cable installation phase, after which only protection campaigns, onshore terminations and testing remained before full commissioning.
On 29 August 2025, Red Eléctrica entered the offshore construction phase of the Tenerife–La Gomera interconnection as Prysmian’s cable‑laying vessel Cable Enterprise began laying the 66 kV double‑circuit submarine line from the coast of San Sebastián de La Gomera towards Tenerife.
In July 2025 Red Eléctrica completed the new 66 kV El Palmar substation in San Sebastián de La Gomera, its first transmission grid facility on the island and the La Gomera terminus of the Tenerife–La Gomera submarine interconnection. The underground GIS substation, integrated architecturally into the local landscape, provides the interface between the island’s distribution network and the new 66 kV double‑circuit link, allowing La Gomera to export surplus renewable generation and reduce dependence on the existing thermal plant.
Red Eléctrica completed the new 66 kV Chío substation in Guía de Isora, Tenerife, in December 2024. The GIS-equipped facility, housed within a building to minimise space and visual impact, is a strategic node on the island’s western transmission grid and serves as the Tenerife landfall and connection point for the 36 km double‑circuit submarine link to La Gomera, enabling secure operation of the Tenerife–La Gomera interconnection.
On 21 March 2023, the President of the Canary Islands and other regional and local authorities held an official ceremony in Chío, Tenerife, marking the start of construction works on Red Eléctrica’s new 66 kV double‑circuit submarine electricity interconnection between Tenerife and La Gomera, with Red Eléctrica stating that work on the new link had already begun.
Authority: Dirección General de Industria y Energía · Licence: Administrative authorisation and declaration of public utility for the high-voltage interconnector and associated substation works
On 28 December 2022, the Dirección General de Industria y Energía issued Resolution No. 2154/2022 granting administrative authorisation and declaring public utility for the high-voltage installations of the "Nuevo enlace eléctrico submarino, doble circuito, entre la subestación Chío (Tenerife) y la subestación El Palmar (La Gomera)" and the associated El Palmar substation works, allowing the Tenerife–La Gomera interconnector project to proceed and enabling the necessary expropriations in the municipalities of Guía de Isora and San Sebastián de La Gomera.
Licence: Declaration of General Interest for the Tenerife–La Gomera submarine electricity interconnection and associated infrastructure
The Government of the Canary Islands approved the declaration of General Interest for the Tenerife–La Gomera underwater interconnection line and its associated infrastructure, formally recognising the project as essential for climate action and the energy transition and paving the way for the remaining administrative authorisations and construction permits.
Licence: Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) approval for the Tenerife–La Gomera submarine electricity interconnection and associated infrastructure
The Local Commission for Environmental Assessment of the Canary Islands, chaired by the Regional Minister for Ecological Transition, approved the Environmental Impact Statement for the Tenerife–La Gomera submarine interconnection line and its associated infrastructure, a key decision enabling subsequent administrative authorisations and construction of the new electricity system linking the two islands.
