By 26 February 2021, Red Eléctrica had completed environmental and technical studies for the Tenerife–La Gomera interconnection and defined the detailed route of the 66 kV double-circuit underground–submarine line, including the approximate 36 km subsea section at up to 1,145 m depth and the locations of the new Chío (Tenerife) and El Palmar (La Gomera) substations. The selected cable route and associated landfalls were engineered to minimise landscape impact and maximise protection of marine and terrestrial flora and fauna, using horizontal/directional drilling and a micro‑tunnel solution in coastal areas to avoid disturbing coastal biology.
