Turnkey 600 MW, 450 kV monopolar HVDC interconnector between Stärnö (Karlshamn, Sweden) and Ustka/Bruskowo Wielkie (near Słupsk, Poland), using a single mass‑impregnated HVDC submarine/underground cable over a route of about 254 km, with separate metallic return cables.
ABB was awarded a turnkey contract by SwePol Link AB in 1997 to deliver the SwePol Link HVDC interconnector between Sweden and Poland. The scope covered design, manufacture, supply and installation of the 600 MW, 450 kV monopolar HVDC system, including the mass‑impregnated submarine power cable and associated underground land cable sections, plus the converter station equipment at Stärnö in Sweden and Bruskowo Wielkie near Słupsk in Poland. ABB engineered and laid roughly 254 km of high‑voltage DC cable forming the main interconnector, provided metallic return cables, buried the subsea sections, installed the underground stretches between landfalls and converter stations, and commissioned the full system. The contract, valued at about US$ 260 million, brought the link into commercial operation around mid‑2000.
