On 16 July 2020, Ofgem notified its conditional decision approving the 600 MW Shetland electricity transmission project (Shetland HVDC Link), a subsea HVDC link between mainland Scotland and the Shetland Isles proposed by Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE-T). This Final Needs Case decision authorised delivery of the link, planned for completion in Q1 2024, subject to Ofgem being satisfied by the end of 2020 that the Viking Energy Wind Farm was likely to proceed, thereby enabling the project’s investment and funding arrangements to move forward.
