ANSALDO A.S.I. acted as a main HVDC converter station supplier for the SACOI 2 three‑terminal link. Together with General Electric, it designed, manufactured and delivered the new thyristor‑based converter equipment for the Codrongianos (Sardinia) and Suvereto (mainland Italy) terminals. The 1992 upgrade replaced the original mercury‑arc valve technology with air‑cooled thyristor valves and associated HVDC apparatus, transforming the scheme into a 300 MW bipolar LCC interconnection at ±200 kV. ANSALDO A.S.I.’s scope covered engineering of the converter poles, supply of valves, transformers and smoothing reactors, and participation in installation and commissioning of the two main converter stations.
