ANSALDO A.S.I., historically known as Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali (ASI), is the industrial systems branch that emerged from the Italian engineering group Ansaldo’s electromechanical plant founded in Genoa in 1899. Over more than 160 years it developed into a specialist provider of engineered‑to‑order electrical and automation solutions, designing and manufacturing medium- and large‑sized industrial electric motors and generators, low- and medium‑voltage drives, power electronics for power supply and power quality, and complete industrial control and automation systems. Its core markets include energy (thermal, nuclear and renewable power plants, transmission and distribution substations, HVDC and FACTS), metals and steel, petrochemical and oil & gas, marine propulsion and on‑board power generation, and heavy industries such as mining, material handling, cement, rubber, cable systems and general industrial automation. In the energy sector the company supplies variable speed drive systems, generators, static excitation systems and soft starters for auxiliary equipment, and turnkey substations, with a particular role in power quality and grid integration of renewables and other distributed assets.
The company’s industrial capabilities span revamping and plant modernization, custom power control and large drive systems, and service and maintenance for rotating machines and industrial plants. Project references cited for ASI/Nidec ASI include revamping blast furnaces at Tata Steel UK’s Teesside site, automation and drive systems for cold rolling mills such as Yichang, smart microgrids, ship electrification and retrofits, and ship‑to‑shore power supply systems. Before its acquisition it operated from a Milan headquarters with major Italian production and engineering sites in Milan, Genoa, Monfalcone and Montebello, and had subsidiaries in countries including France, Germany, Romania, Russia and China. In 2011 ASI reported €292 million in sales with 1,217 employees; following its 2012 acquisition by Nidec Corporation it has traded as Nidec ASI and under the wider Nidec Industrial Solutions / Nidec Conversion platform, maintaining the Ansaldo industrial heritage in advanced electrical and automation solutions.
