Rathlin Island was connected to the Northern Ireland mainland electricity supply in 2007 via an undersea cable installed by NIE Networks (Northern Ireland Electricity). The submarine cable runs approximately 6 miles from Ballycastle to Rathlin Island, replacing the island's previous reliance on diesel generators for electricity.
