The Dutch government opened the Offshore Wind Farm Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ) to through shipping as part of the National Water Plan 2016–2021. In a letter dated 14 March 2018, the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations informed the Lower House that the wind farm would be opened to vessel transit on 1 May 2018, under strict conditions and limited to vessels up to 24 metres in length. The change was implemented via a general policy guideline under article 6.10 of the Water Act and a specific Administrative Ruling of General Application (B.A.S.) for Offshore Windpark Egmond aan Zee, setting safety zones and rules for navigation within the wind farm.
