In mid‑2021, the Greek Transmission System Operator (IPTO) and the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) completed a thorough technical and economic planning investigation into interconnecting the Aegean Islands with the mainland power system. The study evaluated alternative interconnection topologies and technologies, including an integrated North‑East Aegean scheme linking Skyros, Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios and Samos. Using detailed comparative assessment with financial and technical criteria, the operators analysed transmission options, security of supply, RES integration potential, and cost impacts. Based on this evaluation, they selected a final interconnection scheme for inclusion in their respective development plans. The work and its results, covering the promotion of the North‑East Aegean islands (including Lesvos and Skyros) for HVAC interconnection, were published in a peer‑reviewed Energies journal paper in June 2021.
