In 2000, ABB was awarded a contract worth about $270 million by the state-owned grid operators TenneT (Netherlands) and Statnett (Norway) to supply the HVDC converter stations and the majority of the underwater cable system for the 580 km NorNed interconnector between Norway and the Netherlands, establishing ABB as the converter station supplier for the project. Later descriptions by Hitachi Energy confirm that this contract covered the two converter stations and most of the cable route for the 700 MW ±450 kV link.
