On 10 October 2024, Lithuanian TSO Litgrid and Swedish TSO Svenska kraftnät signed a contract with Hitachi Energy to upgrade the control system of the NordBalt 700 MW HVDC interconnector between Klaipėda (Lithuania) and Nybro (Sweden). The upgrade focuses on installing new control system logic to enhance grid stability for the Baltic countries and Sweden, and to support the planned synchronous operation of the Baltic power system with the Continental Europe Synchronous Area. The contract scope includes delivery and installation of new hardware and software solutions for the NordBalt control system, along with operator training and updates to technical documentation. The works under this contract are scheduled to be completed by May 2026, improving frequency control capabilities, emergency power control functionality, and reducing short-circuit capacity demand at the connection point, thereby contributing to a more secure and reliable power supply in the region.
