Messina II 380 kV HVAC interconnector (two cable circuits, six single-core cables) between Villafranca Tirrena in Sicily and Scilla in Calabria across the Strait of Messina, including subsea and land sections.
Prysmian Cables & Systems was awarded a turnkey contract by Terna Spa Rete Elettrica Nazionale to deliver the Messina II 380 kV AC interconnector between Villafranca Tirrena (Sicily) and Scilla (Calabria). The approximately €300 million contract covered engineering and design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of two extra‑high‑voltage cable circuits, including both submarine and land sections. Prysmian committed to manufacture the single‑core 380 kV cables at its Arco Felice plant in Italy and to install the subsea section across the Strait of Messina using its own cable‑laying vessel Giulio Verne. The system comprises more than 260 km of cable in total, roughly 38 km offshore and 6 km onshore, and is intended to increase transfer capacity between Sicily and the Italian mainland, enhancing security of supply and facilitating integration of renewable generation.
