Prysmian Group completed and successfully handed over the Messina II extra‑high‑voltage submarine and land cable interconnection between Sicily and Calabria to transmission system operator Terna. The double‑circuit 380 kV HVAC system, totalling about 44 km with 38 km undersea between the Villafranca Tirrena (Sicily) and Scilla (Calabria) power stations and equipped with a permanent Pry‑Cam Grids monitoring system, was engineered, manufactured and installed by Prysmian, marking the start of full commercial operation of the link within Italy’s national grid.
Terna Spa Rete Elettrica Nazionale awarded Prysmian Group a €300 million turnkey contract for the Messina II extra‑high‑voltage submarine and land cable interconnection between Sicily and the Italian mainland. The scope covers engineering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of two 380 kV AC cable circuits totalling over 260 km of cable, including approximately 38 km of submarine route across the Strait of Messina and 5.4 km on land between the Villafranca Tirrena (Sicily) and Scilla (Calabria) substations, providing up to 2,000 MW of transfer capacity and strengthening the Italian national grid.
On 20 February 2009, an inter‑ministerial decree n. 239/EL-76/82/2009 by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of the Environment approved the final design for part of the 380 kV "Sorgente–Rizziconi" interconnector between Sicily and Calabria and granted Terna S.p.A. authorisation to construct and operate the Villafranca Tirrena–Scilla section, comprising submarine and underground cable works not subject to EIA. This authorisation, issued with the agreement of the Calabria and Sicilian regional authorities, provided the first planning consent needed to strengthen the electrical link across the Strait of Messina.
Authority: Ministero dell'ambiente e della tutela del territorio e del mare · Licence: Valutazione di Impatto Ambientale (VIA) per elettrodotto a 380 kV in doppia terna Sorgente–Rizziconi
On 21 December 2006, Terna (Terna Rete Italia S.p.A./Terna S.p.A.) submitted an application for Environmental Impact Assessment (VIA) for the 380 kV double-circuit Sorgente–Rizziconi overhead line, which connects the Sicilian and mainland Italian grids in the Messina–Reggio Calabria area. The VIA application, filed with the Ministry for the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea as part of the authorization process for construction and operation of the line, formally initiated the environmental permitting procedure for this section of the Messina II interconnector.
Asso.subsea lists a project titled "Messina II – Mattresses Installation", indicating that it carried out subsea mattress installation works associated with the Messina II interconnector, providing seabed protection and stabilisation for the submarine cable system across the Strait of Messina.
