Enemalta plc undertook construction-stage works to reinforce the main Malta–Gozo electricity connection by replacing the remaining 33 kV overhead lines in the Mellieħa area with new underground high-voltage cables. The company’s engineers and technicians began laying approximately 10 km of XLPE-insulated 33 kV underground cable connections between the Mellieħa and Vendôme distribution centres, which feed the submarine cables supplying Gozo and Comino. This €1.6 million investment was aimed at improving the reliability and security of supply to Gozo by reducing storm-related faults, easing maintenance compared to aerial lines on tall pylons, and eliminating the visual impact of the overhead route. Works were announced in May 2017 and were scheduled for completion by autumn 2017 as part of Enemalta’s wider network reinforcement programme.
