Enemalta planned to complete the final excavation and laying of the new 33 kV underground cables between Mellieħa and the Vendôme Distribution Centre by autumn 2017, enabling dismantling of the old overhead lines that supply the Malta–Gozo submarine cable landfall.
On 18 May 2017, Enemalta announced a €1.6 million investment to lay 10 kilometres of new 33 kV underground cables in Mellieħa, replacing old overhead lines that supply the Vendôme Distribution Centre at Armier Bay, where the Malta–Gozo submarine power cables connect to serve Gozo and Comino. The project aims to improve the reliability and security of electricity supply to the island of Gozo by reducing storm-related risks, easing maintenance compared to overhead lines, and removing the visual impact of pylons along the route between Mellieħa and Vendôme.

In May 2017 Enemalta began laying two new XLPE-insulated 33 kV underground cable connections, about 10 km long, between the Mellieħa and Vendôme distribution centres to replace aging overhead lines that feed the submarine cables supplying Gozo and Comino.
In early May 2017, Enemalta began installing two new XLPE‑insulated 33 kV underground cable connections, totalling about 10 kilometres, between the Mellieħa Distribution Centre and the Vendôme Distribution Centre at Armier Bay to upgrade the electricity supply route feeding the submarine cables to Gozo and Comino. This cable‑laying project, part of a €1.6 million investment to replace existing overhead 33 kV lines and pylons across Mellieħa, aims to improve the reliability and security of the network supplying the island of Gozo and reduce the visual and weather‑related risks associated with overhead infrastructure.
In 2016 Enemalta completed an upgrade of the Mellieħa Distribution Centre, the main network node supplying electricity towards the Vendôme Distribution Centre and the Malta–Gozo submarine cable links, replacing 1973 transformers and switchgear to double its capacity and improve redundancy for Gozo’s supply.
Enemalta commissioned a new electricity distribution centre at Xewkija, Gozo, in 2015, ending the island’s dependency on the older 1987 Qala distribution centre and strengthening the security of supply delivered via the Malta–Gozo submarine power cables.
Another high-capacity submarine power cable was installed in the Gozo Channel in 2001 to strengthen the Malta–Gozo interconnection and further enhance the stability and capacity of electricity supply to Gozo.
A second 33 kV submarine cable was laid to Gozo in 1987, further reinforcing the island’s electrical connection to Malta and improving reliability after prolonged issues with voltage stability and supply security.
A new 33 kV submarine cable was installed in 1981 to supply Gozo, marking the island’s connection to Malta’s main grid via a modern undersea link and helping to end years of unstable, low-voltage electricity and erratic water supply.
In 1958, the first Malta–Gozo submarine power connection was commissioned, consisting of two submarine cables laid from Malta to Comino and from Comino to Gozo, allowing Gozo to begin receiving its electricity supply from Malta’s main power system rather than relying solely on its local power station.
