On 18 May 2017, Enemalta announced a €1.6 million investment to lay 10 kilometres of new 33 kV underground cables in Mellieħa, replacing old overhead lines that supply the Vendôme Distribution Centre at Armier Bay, where the Malta–Gozo submarine power cables connect to serve Gozo and Comino. The project aims to improve the reliability and security of electricity supply to the island of Gozo by reducing storm-related risks, easing maintenance compared to overhead lines, and removing the visual impact of pylons along the route between Mellieħa and Vendôme.
