132 kV AC cable connection between Cavallino and Sacca Serenella in the Venetian lagoon, approximately 14 km in route length (10 km sub‑lagoon and 4 km underground) using a three‑cable (terna cavo unipolare) HVAC system between the Sacca Serenella and Cavallino primary substations.
Prysmian Group was awarded, following a European tender, the turnkey contract from Terna Rete Italia S.p.A. for the 132 kV "Laguna Veneta" submarine cable links, including the Sacca Serenella–Cavallino connection. For this link, Prysmian carried out detailed electrical and cable system design, manufactured the high‑voltage AC submarine and underground cables at its Arco Felice (Pozzuoli) plant, and performed installation, protection and commissioning of both the 10 km sub‑lagoon and 4 km underground sections, forming a three‑core (three single‑core cables) circuit between the Sacca Serenella and Cavallino primary substations. The contract scope also covered associated fibre‑optic communications cables, temperature monitoring systems and marine cable protections, together with a 10‑year fault‑response and repair obligation on the supplied cables. The project formed part of Terna’s wider Insula initiative to reinforce and modernise the electricity network in the Venetian lagoon and to improve supply security for Venice and nearby coastal areas.
