On 15 June 2018, Terna activated the 132 kV underground cable linking the Sacca Serenella and Cavallino primary substations in the Venetian Lagoon, marking the first energisation of the new connection. The 14 km link, including around 10 km of undersea cable, was laid using environmentally sustainable techniques in a lagoon of high environmental value as part of a wider project to modernise Venice’s electricity grid.
