In 1971, installation of a new AC power cable from the Jutland mainland across the Wadden Sea to Mandø was completed and taken into use, replacing the island’s aging local power plant and allowing households and properties on Mandø to convert to grid-supplied alternating current at significantly lower electricity prices. The submarine cable from the Åbenrå power system was laid over the seabed along the ebb road, with on-island distribution cables trenched to individual houses, after which the Mandø electricity works was shut down.
