In the summer of 1971, cable installation works began to connect Mandø to the Åbenrå electricity works via an AC power cable laid across the Wadden Sea and along the Ebbevejen, with a small excavator trenching across Mandø and pulling the cable to individual houses, replacing the island’s overstressed local diesel-based plant and enabling supply at mainland tariffs.
In 1971, Mandø’s local electricity plant was shut down when an electric cable from the mainland was laid to the island, marking the start of continuous grid electricity supply via the Jutland–Mandø connection and replacing on-island generation.
In 1971, installation of a new AC power cable from the Jutland mainland across the Wadden Sea to Mandø was completed and taken into use, replacing the island’s aging local power plant and allowing households and properties on Mandø to convert to grid-supplied alternating current at significantly lower electricity prices. The submarine cable from the Åbenrå power system was laid over the seabed along the ebb road, with on-island distribution cables trenched to individual houses, after which the Mandø electricity works was shut down.
In 1971, onshore construction works for the new AC electricity connection to Mandø began, with a small excavator trenching across the island and pulling an electric cable with service branches to individual properties and houses, as part of the replacement of the island’s worn-out local DC power plant with supply via a cable from the mainland. The works took place on Mandø through the summer and autumn, accompanied by wider construction activity in the Wadden Sea and on the island.
