Helgoland's link to the German power grid with a 53 km MV/AC cable, manufactured in one piece and laid as Germany's longest submarine power cable.
Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke GmbH (NSW) was contracted by E.ON Hanse AG to deliver and install Germany’s longest submarine power cable to supply electricity from the mainland to the island of Helgoland. NSW manufactured in one continuous length a 30 kV medium‑voltage AC submarine cable of roughly 53 km and provided the necessary accessories. The project, valued at about €20 million, replaced Helgoland’s ageing diesel generator-based power supply with a permanent grid connection from St. Peter‑Ording. NSW also carried out the subsea cable installation using its NOSTAG 10 cable‑lay barge. The island link entered service in 2009 and is cited by NSW as a key reference project for medium‑voltage AC island interconnections.
