In 2018 Hitachi Energy was contracted to carry out an upgrade of the Gotland HVDC link, which includes the Gotland 2 connection between Västervik and Ygne. The company engineered, supplied and installed its MACH digital control and protection system, replacing the aging control equipment that forms the “brain” of the HVDC converters. The project also included upgrades to the cooling system and provision of a modern operator interface. These works modernised the control and auxiliary systems at the onshore converter stations, enabling increased integration of renewable energy and improving the reliability and availability of the Gotland interconnection while extending its service life.
