Guernsey Electricity (GEL) signed a contract with Danish cable manufacturer NKT for the purchase and installation of a new 90 kV high-voltage submarine cable system to replace the existing GJ1 transmission link between Guernsey and Jersey in the English Channel. The contract, announced to the States of Guernsey on 27 March, forms the core of a £30 million project (plus £5 million for additional survey and land-based works) intended to address reliability and design issues with the old GJ1 cable and to restore resilient low‑carbon electricity imports, with the new link expected to enter service in 2019.
