In mid-2024, Schleswig-Holstein Netz (SH Netz) began installing two new subsea power cables between the mainland near Emmelsbüll-Horsbüll and the island of Föhr, replacing ageing cables from the 1950s and 1960s. According to a 5 August 2024 press release, the cables were laid over the preceding three weeks using the specialist vessel MS Catjan and the plough vessel "Nessie" to modernise and secure the island’s electricity supply and accommodate growing demand and renewable generation.
