The onshore converter stations at Ytterby on Åland and Naantali on the Finnish mainland, forming the 100 MW HVDC interconnector known as Ål-link/Finlandskabeln with a roughly 160 km subsea cable, were commissioned and made ready for operation in late 2015. This commissioning created a new cable link between Naantali and Jomala/Ytterby that primarily secures electricity supply to Åland as a reserve connection to the Swedish cable and enables potential future power transit between Finland and Sweden, reducing the need for local reserve generation agreements.
