By May 2018, IPTO had completed Phase A of the Cyclades interconnection—a 150 kV radial link from Lavrio to Syros with onward connections to Paros, Mykonos and Tinos—so that the island loads were supplied by the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System, bringing the Syros–Tinos cable into full commercial operation as part of the overall system.
ADMIE completed installation of the submarine transmission cables for Phase A of the Cyclades interconnection, including the Syros–Tinos link formed by a 33 km submarine cable from Syros to the northern tip of Tinos, in the first months of 2018. Following completion, the interconnected islands’ loads, including Tinos via Syros, began being supplied from the National Transmission System instead of local oil-fired generation, which was placed in reserve.
In 2016, Hellenic Cables completed the turnkey 150 kV AC submarine cable project for IPTO, including design, manufacturing, installation, protection, termination, on-site testing and final commissioning of the 114 km Cyclades A Interconnection, which specifically interconnected Syros and Tinos via a 33 km cable, marking initial energisation of the Syros–Tinos leg.
In 2015, the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) began engineering, procurement, and onshore civil and electrical works for the Cycladic Islands interconnection Phase A, including the Syros–Tinos 150 kV AC submarine cable with its HV cable terminal in Tinos and associated GIS substations, under contracts with Hellenic Cables and other suppliers, for a project period running from 2015 to 2017.
Licence: Designation of the Cyclades interconnection as a project of ‘general importance for the economy of the country’
On 3 January 2011, Ministerial Decision No. FA/E 3.2/57/3 formally classified the project “Interconnection of Cyclades Islands with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System” as a project of “general importance for the economy of the country,” providing high-level governmental recognition for the multi‑phase scheme that includes the Phase A Syros–Tinos 150 kV submarine cable link.
Licence: Environmental permit for the entire project
Environmental permit for the entire IPTO Cyclades interconnection project, which includes the subsea 150 kV cable connections among Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and the Greek mainland, was granted by the competent authorities in September 2009 following consultations with stakeholders and local communities. The permit, based on EIAs for all GIS substations, concluded that with specified mitigation measures the project would not cause significant adverse environmental effects or harm protected European sites.
Licence: Designation of the Cyclades interconnection as a project of ‘major importance for the country’s economy’
In November 2006, a Greek ministerial decision designated the Cyclades interconnection project—which includes the Syros‑centred 150 kV links later implemented in Phase A, such as the Syros–Tinos cable—as a project of “major importance for the country’s economy,” reflecting its strategic role in connecting Syros, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and strengthening the Andros–Tinos interconnection with the mainland grid.
Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO/ADMIE) commissioned Hellenic Cables (with subsidiary Fulgor) for the second sub-project of the Cyclades Islands Interconnection tender, covering design, manufacture, laying, protection and termination of 150 kV underground and submarine cable links including the Syros–Tinos connection and a 150 kV termination at Tinos. The turnkey contract, valued at €93 million, makes Hellenic Cables the main cable supplier and installer for the Syros–Tinos leg of Cyclades Phase A, later completed in 2016 as part of a 114 km package of submarine AC cables between Syros–Tinos, Syros–Mykonos and Syros–Paros.
