Under Greek law, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) were carried out for all gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations associated with the IPTO Cyclades Interconnection project, which includes the reinforcement of Syros. Following these EIAs and consultation with relevant stakeholders and local communities, the competent authorities granted an environmental permit covering the entire project in September 2009. The permit stipulates specific mitigating measures and environmental conditions and confirms that, if these are implemented, the project is not expected to have significant adverse effects on the environment or on protected European sites. This environmental permit provided the regulatory clearance needed for the Cyclades Interconnection works, including the Syros reinforcement, to proceed in compliance with national environmental legislation.
