Phase C of the Cyclades Interconnection, involving the second 150 kV submarine cable between Lavrio on the Greek mainland and Syros and the associated connection works at both ends, was completed in October 2020, bringing the reinforcement of Syros into full operation and enhancing the reliability of power supply to the Cyclades islands.
As part of Phase C of the Cyclades Interconnection, ADMIE awarded Nexans a turnkey contract to deliver the second 150 kV HVAC submarine interconnector between Lavrio and Syros, with delivery and commissioning of the interconnection system scheduled for August 2020. The plan foresaw completing seabed survey, design, manufacturing, installation, protection, and commissioning of approximately 108 km of three-core submarine cable so the link could be brought into service around that time.
ADMIE completed and commissioned the extension of the 150 kV GIS coupling substation at Lavrio (Υ/Σ Ζεύξης GIS Λαυρίου 150 kV), adding two 150 kV/25 MVAr reactors as part of the Cyclades Interconnection Phase C – Reinforcement of Syros, with the works reported as completed in 2020.
By early December 2019, IPTO and contractor Nexans had begun rolling out the submarine cables for Phase C of the Cyclades Interconnection, initiating installation of the second Lavrio–Syros 150 kV HVAC interconnector to reinforce the Cyclades grid.
Cyclades Interconnection Phase C – Reinforcement of Syros, which installs a second 150 kV Lavrio–Syros submarine cable, is part of the subsidised multi‑phase project "Interconnection of Cyclades Islands with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System", co‑financed by the European Union and Greece via the NSRF 2014‑2020; Phase C has a budget of about €122.3 million and benefits from this EU/NSRF grant support, within an overall Cyclades project to which the ERDF is contributing around €138.2 million.
In November 2018, ADMIE/IPTO awarded Nexans a turnkey contract worth about EUR 111 million to supply and install the second 150 kV HVAC submarine power cable between Lavrion on the Greek mainland and Syros as part of Cyclades Interconnection Phase C – Reinforcement of Syros. The contract, which completed IPTO’s contract conclusion process in November 2018, covers seabed survey, design, manufacture, installation and protection of approximately 108 km of three-core cable with integrated fibre optics, with Nexans named as the successful bidder for this phase.
On 21 August 2018, Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE/IPTO) extended the deadline for submission of bids for the tender covering the third phase of the Cyclades interconnection project, which includes the second Lavrio (mainland)–Syros 150 kV link. The extension shifted the bid deadline to September 2018, marking a key procurement-stage milestone for Phase C of the Cyclades Interconnection – Reinforcement of Syros.
IPTO (ADMIE) reports that Phase C of the Cyclades Interconnection had begun with the laying of the second 150 kV submarine cable between Lavrio on the Greek mainland and Syros, marking the start of offshore construction for the reinforcement link intended to improve reliability of supply to the Cyclades islands.
Licence: Ministerial designation of the Cyclades interconnection (including Phase C – reinforcement of Syros) as a project of general importance for the economy of the country
On 3 January 2011, a ministerial decision (No. FA/E 3.2/57/3) of the Hellenic authorities designated the multi‑phase project "Interconnection of Cyclades Islands with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System"—which includes Phase C, the second Lavrio–Syros cable reinforcement—as a project of general importance for the economy of Greece.
