Construction of a DC cable link, connecting the converter station of Attica with that of Crete. This cable link shall include two underground HVDC cables, one for each pole, plus a MVDC cable for ground return and an FO cable from Koumoundouros to the Attica landing point, two submarine HVDC cables of about 335 km between Attica and Korakia in Crete, and two underground HVDC cables plus MVDC and FO cables from the Korakia landing point to the Damasta converter station in Crete. Engineering, procurement and installation of the underground cable systems for the connection of the converter stations with the submarine cables of the eastern and western poles and with the submarine cables for the connection of the electrode stations, including the option to extend the interconnection with underground cables from the beaching point to the Crete conversion station, were awarded to NKT HV Cables AB.
Ariadne Interconnection awarded NKT HV Cables AB an EPC contract for the underground DC cable systems on the Crete–Attica HVDC interconnector. The scope covers engineering, procurement, manufacture and installation of the ±500 kV HVDC land cables that connect the Koumoundouros converter station in Attica to the Pachi/Megara landfall and the Damasta converter station in Crete to the Korakia landfall, as well as underground connections to the submarine cables serving the electrode stations. An option to extend the underground section from the beach landing to the Crete converter station was exercised. In total, NKT supplies and installs around 66 km of onshore HVDC power cable (two parallel poles over the onshore route), forming the land sections of the 1,000 MW island interconnection.
