In 2021, manufacturing activities for the Crete–Attica HVDC interconnection progressed into the factory phase at the contractors’ facilities. Production of the submarine and associated cables began at the manufacturers’ plants engaged by Ariadne Interconnection, marking the start of large-scale fabrication of the 500 kV HVDC cable system. Within the same year, manufacturing of the converter-station equipment also commenced, covering key high-voltage components required for the new converter stations at Koumoundourou in Attica and Damasta near Heraklion in Crete. These parallel factory campaigns for the cables and converter equipment represented a major transition from design and seabed study work into hardware production, underpinning subsequent installation and construction milestones for the interconnector.
