In 2020, Ariadne Interconnection S.P.S.A., a subsidiary of Greece’s state grid operator IPTO, awarded Nexans a significant contract for the Crete–Attica interconnection. Under this contract, Nexans is to design, manufacture, and install a 335 km subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system linking the Attica region on mainland Greece with the Herakleion area in Crete. The awarded scope covers one 500 MW HVDC subsea cable system, forming half of the interconnector’s total 1,000 MW bipolar capacity. The project involves subsea installation in water depths reaching up to 1,200 m, requiring robust cable design and specialised installation solutions. The interconnection is intended to connect Crete’s electricity network with the mainland, supporting the transition away from fossil fuel generation towards wind and solar resources, while improving security of supply and enabling export of surplus renewable power from Crete.
