Array 2 – Export Cable for Blyth Offshore Demonstrator: single 66 kV HVAC radial export and onshore cable system (~6.5 km subsea route plus ~1.2 km onshore) connecting the 41.5 MW demonstration array to the Blyth onshore substation at Cambois Bay.
VBMS, acting under contract to EDF Energy Renewables, selected Nexans to supply the 66 kV cable system for the Blyth Offshore Demonstrator, covering both the inter-array network and the separate export cables. Nexans manufactured and tested the 66 kV subsea cables at its specialist factory in Hanover, Germany, and supplied them in 2017 in single lengths per circuit. Nexans Power Accessories in Belgium produced the associated 66 kV connectors, adapted from its established 33 kV technology. For the Array 2 export connection, Nexans’s scope included manufacturing approximately 6.5 km of 66 kV subsea export cable between the offshore turbines and the Cambois Bay landfall and around 1.2 km of matching 66 kV onshore cable to the Blyth onshore substation. This project was the first commercial demonstration of 66 kV cables used for both inter-array and export functions in an offshore wind farm.
