In May 2017, Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (BOWL) began the first stage of export cable works for the Beatrice project at Portgordon near Buckie, initiating installation of direct cable pipes beneath Portgordon Beach using a micro‑tunnelling "Direct Pipe" method as part of the 220 kV export cable system that connects the offshore wind farm to shore. The campaign, led by main contractor Nexans, covers two complete 220 kV export cable circuits totalling about 260 km of onshore and offshore cables and involves specialist vessels and equipment operating from Buckie harbour.
