VBW Weigt GmbH (Survey Office Weigt) is a private surveying and offshore engineering company based in Ziesendorf, Germany, with a branch office in Hamburg. Founded in 1992, it has provided surveying, hydrography and satellite geodesy services for more than 27 years, with an employee base in the 11–50 range. The firm operates as a service provider in engineering surveying, hydrography of inland, nearshore and offshore waters, geotechnical engineering and 3D laser scanning. Since the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) approved the first offshore wind farm in Germany, VBW Weigt’s activities have progressively focused on offshore engineering for the planning, installation and maintenance of offshore wind turbines and their export cables.
VBW Weigt plans and executes geophysical and geotechnical investigations in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, including complete survey programmes for offshore wind farm sites. Its capabilities cover side-scan sonar imaging of the seabed, bathymetric surveys, and geophysical exploration of the sub-seafloor to interpret sediment layering and detect obstacles such as boulders, subsea cables and geological disturbances down to around 100 m below the seabed. The company deploys a redundant portfolio of geophysical and geotechnical measurement technologies and operates its own survey vessels, including the MV Seabed Explorer, to deliver customer-specific complete or selective services in line with national and international offshore standards. Services are complemented by vessel positioning, GIS, construction monitoring, geo-referenced and laboratory-supported data evaluation, and expert reporting. VBW Weigt is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 and reports that its services have been used on more than 90% of approved and licensed wind farm areas and associated cable routes in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea, serving transmission system operators, utilities, contractors and authorities across the offshore wind value chain.
