SouthCoast Wind Energy LLC, formerly Mayflower Wind and Mayflower Wind Energy LLC, is a U.S.-based offshore wind project developer focused on delivering large-scale renewable power to New England. The company is a 50/50 joint venture between Shell New Energies US LLC and Ocean Winds North America, and is legally structured as a limited liability company organized under Delaware law. Its headquarters are in Boston, Massachusetts, with additional offices in Fall River, where it has established an executive, outreach and development office close to key port infrastructure on the South Coast.
SouthCoast Wind is developing a federal offshore wind lease area located in deep waters more than 30 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and about 20 miles south of Nantucket. The area has potential to supply up to 2,400 MW of offshore wind capacity, with earlier awards from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts including 804 MW selected in 2019 and a subsequent 400 MW award, alongside bids into the state’s 83C III procurement. The project’s first 1,200 MW is planned to interconnect at Brayton Point in Somerset, Massachusetts, with additional grid connections planned in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The company’s Construction and Operations Plan describes offshore substations, foundations, inter-array cables and export cables linking to onshore substations and existing transmission rights-of-way.
The developer is investing in a regional supply chain and port infrastructure, including plans for an operations and maintenance port at the Borden & Remington Ironworks complex in Fall River and use of New Bedford as the home port for crew transfer vessels. It has agreed with Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding in Somerset, MA, on the design and conditional build of a Jones Act–compliant hybrid battery–diesel crew transfer vessel in collaboration with technology partners such as Incat Crowther, BAR Technologies, Corvus Energy and ABS. SouthCoast Wind works with specialist contractors including Ventolines on transport and installation expertise and has used Guice Offshore vessels for offshore surveying and geotechnical work. The company runs virtual open houses and maintains a SouthCoast-focused outreach program, coupled with economic development and workforce training commitments for local communities, ports and educational institutions across Massachusetts’ South Coast.
