Iberdrola is a Spanish multinational electric utility company headquartered in the Torre Iberdrola in Bilbao. Created in 1992 through the merger of Hidroeléctrica Española and Iberduero, it operates as a publicly listed company and is included in indices such as the IBEX 35 and the Forbes Global 2000. The group’s core activities span electricity generation, transmission, distribution and retail, along with renewable power production, smart grids, energy solutions and natural gas production, sale and distribution. It is one of the largest global utilities by market capitalisation and the largest producer of wind power, with total installed capacity above 60 GW, of which over 40 GW are from renewable sources.
Iberdrola is organised through regional subholding companies and head-of-business entities. Iberdrola España covers Spanish networks, sustainable generation and liberalised supply; ScottishPower in the United Kingdom and Avangrid in the United States manage regulated networks, renewable generation and retail; Neoenergia is the Brazilian country subholding; Iberdrola México oversees Mexican generation and renewables; and Iberdrola Energía Internacional coordinates activities across other European markets, Australia and selected countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Across 20 countries of operation, the group reports revenue of around €44.7 billion, a regulated networks asset base of about €51 billion, more than 40,000 employees and tens of millions of customers.
Strategically, Iberdrola prioritises investment in electricity networks and renewable generation, with record annual investments exceeding €14 billion and a 2025–2028 plan to deploy €58 billion mainly in A-rated countries, led by the US and UK. It is a leading issuer of green and sustainable finance instruments, has built a sustainable financing portfolio above €60 billion, and pursues decarbonisation through large-scale wind (onshore and offshore), solar, hydroelectric and storage projects, as well as green hydrogen and smart grid initiatives. The company reports very low CO2 emissions per kWh in Europe and consistently ranks highly in global sustainability benchmarks.
