Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese multinational electronics and infrastructure conglomerate headquartered in Saiwai-ku, Kawasaki, Kanagawa. Originating from 19th‑century predecessors and formed as Tokyo Shibaura Denki in 1939, it adopted the Toshiba name in 1978. The group operates worldwide and reported consolidated net sales of ¥3.51 trillion and 95,131 employees as of March 31, 2025. Its diversified portfolio spans electrical equipment, software and IT solutions, industrial and social infrastructure, and advanced components including semiconductors, hard disk drives, printers, batteries, and lighting, together with information security technologies such as quantum cryptography.
Toshiba’s business structure has evolved from four major groupings—Digital Products, Electronic Devices, Home Appliances, and Social Infrastructure—to current global segments of Energy Solutions, Digital Infrastructure Solutions, Devices & Technology, and Retail & Printing Solutions. Many end‑market consumer lines such as home appliances, TVs, PCs, HVAC and memory have been transferred into separate or partner-owned companies, while energy and infrastructure have become core. Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation, spun out in 2017, develops, manufactures and sells energy products, systems and services across thermal and nuclear power, hydro, photovoltaic, geothermal and wind generation, transmission and distribution equipment, grid solutions, energy storage and hydrogen-based systems, and applies nuclear technologies to healthcare through heavy-ion therapy systems.
Toshiba maintains a substantial international manufacturing and engineering footprint, including North American bases such as Toshiba International Corporation for motors, drives, power electronics and transmission and distribution equipment, and Toshiba America Energy Systems for turbines, generators and energy services. Strategic initiatives include collaborations to decarbonize power generation, exemplified by a 2025 memorandum of understanding with GE Vernova to integrate Toshiba’s carbon capture technologies with gas turbine combined-cycle plants in Japan and other Asian markets.
