Südkabel GmbH is a Mannheim-based cable manufacturer and system provider specialising in underground power transmission and distribution. Founded in 1898 and now part of the Sumitomo Electric Group, the company develops, produces and delivers medium-, high- and extra-high-voltage XLPE-insulated power cables and matching accessories, and supplies turnkey AC and DC cable systems up to 525–550 kV. Its portfolio covers underground cables for medium, high and extra‑high voltage, outdoor and SF6 switchgear terminations, plug‑in terminations for outer and inner cone systems, joints, cable bridges for medium voltage and fittings for electrostatic precipitator cables. Südkabel also provides temporary site cables and HVDC cable systems, serving utilities and transmission system operators in Germany and internationally.
Beyond manufacturing, Südkabel delivers integrated project engineering, including system calculation and design, project planning, laying supervision, installation of accessories, on‑site testing and commissioning. The company offers training and seminars through its Mannheim training centre for engineers, technicians and installation personnel, and provides 24‑hour fault and troubleshooting services. It operates its own on‑site resonance test facility capable of testing cable systems up to Um = 550 kV and holds ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 and 50001 certifications. Südkabel has a track record of more than 1,500 km of 400/500 kV XLPE cables and over 3,000 accessories installed worldwide and has been involved in major HVDC and corridor projects, including Germany’s Corridor A‑Nord and Korridor B as well as an interconnector between Ireland and Wales. In fiscal 2023, the company generated revenue of about EUR 140 million with roughly 260 employees, positioning it as the sole German manufacturer of high and extra‑high voltage cable systems and an important contributor to the energy transition.
