Project documents for the Western Isles HVDC Link indicate that testing and commissioning of the 1.8 GW HVDC connection are planned for spring/summer 2030, ahead of the planned grid connection in winter 2030. This system testing phase will follow completion of onshore and subsea cable installation in 2029 and represents the final technical verification of the link before it begins transmitting power between the Western Isles and the GB transmission network.
